My Cute Pixel NFT Integrates Chainlink VRF to Help Bring Transparency to the Lunian NFT Collection

We’re excited to announce that My Cute Pixel NFT — a platform for pixel art NFT collections — has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on Polygon mainnet. By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to mint Lunian NFTs in a provably fair manner. Ultimately this creates a more exciting and transparent user experience, as users can verify that they all have equal access to obtaining the rarest Lunian NFTs.

My Cute Pixel NFT creates pixel art NFT collections that combine a nostalgic, retro style with cutting-edge blockchain technology. In this way, we aim to provide users with exciting features and utilities that differentiate Lunian NFTs from traditional art. At a higher level, we’re aiming to explore the intersection of digital art and blockchain technology and produce NFT collections that are at the forefront of these technologies.

Unfortunately, collectors cannot always trust development teams to be impartial and keep the NFT minting process completely random and fair. Developers, humans as they are, may manipulate the mint to reserve the most valuable NFTs for themselves, their family, their friends, or influencers promoting the mint. That’s why providing our NFT collectors with complete transparency into the minting process was mission-critical for My Cute Pixel NFT. While they may not know our team personally, it’s important that they can audit our smart contracts and verify that they function as intended. Thus, we felt it was essential to integrate Chainlink VRF as it enables anyone to verify the randomness underpinning the Lunian NFT mint, helping ensure each user had a fair chance of receiving the rarest NFTs.

In order to mint the 909 unique Lunian NFTs from hatched seedpods in a verifiably random manner, we need access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.

After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by a time-tested oracle network, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.

Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The My Cute Pixel NFT smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that our Lunians collection is provably fair and was not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the My Cute Pixel NFT team.

We’re also looking at integrating Chainlink Keepers to support dynamic NFTs for our Lunians Collection. By automatically calling a function in our smart contract based on the time of day, we can create dynamic NFTs that look different depending on the day-night cycle in the real world.
